Recreational sports promotes basketball, badminton tournaments

During these last two months of the fall semester, Recreational Sports is offering a three-on-three basketball league and a badminton tournament for students, staff and faculty members.

The basketball league, which has 54 teams registered to play, started Monday. There are 46 men’s teams and eight women’s teams participating in the league, according to Rec Sports Assistant Coordinator Ryan McCallum.

McCallum said that each team will play five or six regular season games in a best-of-three format. He said that teams will play on a half court where each basket inside the three-point line is considered one point. Any shot made outside the three-point line will be scored as a two points.

He said a single elimination playoff tournament will follow the regular season games to decide the league champion.

“Everything is running smooth so far. Teams are showing up and having fun,” said McCallum.

Each team paid $30 to play in the three-on-three basketball league.

The badminton tournament will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, in the Yosemite Hall 171. The start time is still being decided, but will likely be during the evening said McCallum. The last day to sign up for the tournament is Wednesday, Nov. 14.

McCallum is expecting 32 to 50 people to sign up for the tournament which will be played individually. The cost for each participant to play is five dollars.

McCallum said that depending on how many people sign up to play will determine the format of the tournament. He said that he is hoping the tournament will be round robin or double-elimination so players get to play more than one game.

McCallum said that he is proud that Rec Sports is offering the badminton tournament for the first time.

“The main thing I see is that we (Rec Sports) will start to tap into a more diverse student body,” said McCallum. “The wider range of sports we can offer means the more students we can get involved in our program.”Andrew Eggers can be reached at [email protected]
