Men’s tennis competes at Northwest Regional Championships
October 17, 2007
The Sacramento State men’s tennis team performed at the Wison/ITA Northwest Regional Championships, as freshman Kiryl Harbatsiuk reached the semi-finals of the main singles draw and sophomore Xaiver Barajas-Smith won the consolation singles championship.
The five-day tournament was held at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, Washington, and concluded Tuesday. Harbatsiuk bested most of the 70 man singles draw, coming up just short of the finals and an automatic berth into the ITA National Indoor Championships, losing to overall No. 2 seed, Richard Wire of Stanford.
Reigning Big Sky MVP, Barajas-Smith fell early on, losing in the second round of the singles draw to Blaine Shields of Santa Clara University. Barajas-Smith quickly rebounded however, as he rallied off five wins in a row to take home the top honor of the consolation division.
Fellow Hornets Holden Ching, Tim Lantin, Sven-David Ruett, and Anton Stryhas also competed in the tournament but were knocked out of the main singles draw and then the consolation division early on, with both Ching and Lantin falling to the eventual opponent of Barajas-Smith in the consolation finals, David Chu of Washington.
The Northwest Regional is one of nine such events taking place across the country in the next few weeks as teams prepare for a possible invitation to the nationals. The Hornets will play the next and final match of the season at the Bronco Classic in Santa Clara on Oct. 26-28.
