Hornets force 1-1 tie at Pepperdine

State Hornet

The Sacramento State women’s soccer team managed a tie at Pepperdine Friday, finishing the double overtime contest at 1-1. The Hornets have yet to win a road game this season, posting a 0-2-2 away from Hornet Field. Pepperdine controlled the ball for most of the first half, out-shooting the Hornets 9-2 and attempting seven corner kicks. The Hornets defense was able to hold off the Waves until junior Amanda Rupp scored the first goal of the game in the 42nd minute. Freshman Sage Coralli was credited with the assist. The Waves continued to control the ball in the second half, and came very close to shutting out the Hornets. Sac State would not score the tying goal until the 89th minute, when senior Katie McCoy took a free kick after a foul by the Waves. Her kick was advanced by a header from senior Amanda Gray, and junior Sarah Howard netted her first goal of the year off of Gray’s header. The teams would play two overtime periods to try to determine a winner, but Howard’s goal would be the game’s last. The Hornets record this season is now 6-2-2. They are undefeated over their last four games, going 3-0-1 in that stretch. The Waves are 2-4-4 and are on a five game unbeaten streak. The game saw 45 fouls called, which is the most for any game the Hornets have played in this season. Sac State was also out shot by its opponent for the second straight time on the road, bested by Pepperdine 23-7. The 23 shots are a season-high for the Waves. Sophomore goalkeeper Mandy Trojan recorded nine saves in goal for the Hornets, her most in a single game this year. The Hornets will end its two-game road trip Sunday against the Lions of Loyola Marymount at 1 p.m. The Lions are 7-3-1 this season, and are currently on a seven game winning streak. The game will be the last non-conference match for the Hornets.

The Hornets will start conference play on Oct. 12 at home against Weber State.
