Forum calls voters, candidates, public speakers to Union
October 29, 2007
Nearly 300 people received non-partisan voter information at the Sacramento State University Union today.
The 6th Annual Asian Pacific Islander Voters Education and Candidates Forum was hosted by the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association Community Education Foundation and 30 major community organizations.
The forum was held inside the University Ballroom where Asian-Americans, and others interested in voting, were given the opportunity to learn about political issues.
Citrus Heights Mayor Jeff Slowey was one of many politicians in attendance. He said he liked the non-partisan theme of the event.
“It’s not about who wins and who loses,” Slowey said. “It’s about representing the people.”
Attendees at the free event had an opportunity to register to vote at a number of tables.
Roseanna Torretto, a representative from the League of Women Voters, said she was registering anybody interested. She said she also liked that the program was non-partisan.
“We’re here to serve the whole group of people today,” Torretto said.
One potential voter was freshman bio-chemistry major Xue Her. After attending the event, she said she had a better understanding of presidential candidates and their views on the Iraq war, an important issue to her.
She said she felt the event was important in educating her and other Asians about candidates and their platforms.
“A lot of Asians don’t know how to vote,” she said. “But they have their citizenship.”
