ASI allocates money for on-campus clubs
October 1, 2007
The Pride Club, Camp Club and the Women’s Resource Center are asking Associated Students Inc. to allow them to spend their external grant money differently this year. ASI requires clubs to gain approval for their financial revisions when more than 10 percent of its funds are reallocated.
The Finance and Budget Committee recommended approval for both Pride and Camp, but not the Women’s Resource Center. Snyder said there were questions that needed to be asked, such as the reasoning behind where the center wishes to spend its money.
“I don’t know what the specific questions are,” said Women’s Resource Director Patricia Grady.
“There was a large decrease in the amount of money going towards student wages,” Snyder said.
Women’s Resource budget was reduced $4,000 from last year.
Grady will meet with the Finance and Budget Committee at its next meeting on Oct. 9.
Knowledge from summer training to be tested
ASI Executive Director Pat Worley is administrating a test to ASI directors via e-mail. The test will ask directors what they learned at ASI’s retreat held Aug. 20.
Worley said the test should be taken seriously, because it deals with the strategic planning training that directors participated in at the retreat.
“It’s a way to measure the means of retention in an academic sense,” Worley said.
Worley also said directors will be allowed to use strategic planning booklets they received from the retreat during the test. She said directors will be able to “roll right through the exam.”
Worley said she did not wish to comment on what the consequences would be for those who failed, as she did not think anyone would be in that situation.
Nominations for EVP replacement, committee assistance
ASI board meetings are currently conducted by Executive Vice President Miguel Cervantes. On Sept. 26, Cervantes nominated Director of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies Michael Nguyen to serve as his replacement, should he be absent for future meetings.
President Christina Romero questioned whether Nguyen received formal lessons that would prepare him for the position and requested that he seek training from Cervantes and parliamentarian Scott Burns.
“The chair of the board must not take sides on the issues and allow both sides of the story to be shared,” Cervantes said.
The ASI Board of Directors will vote on both nominations at next week’s Oct. 3 board meeting.
