Dedini nets first victory
September 3, 2007
Randy Dedini picked up his first victory as the head coach of the Sacramento State women’s soccer team last Sunday on Hornet Field.
The Hornets beat the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers 4-0.
“(Sac State) is a good squad,” said Mount St. Mary’s coach Tom Gosselin. “They are well coached and played very well.”
Senior Katie McCoy led Sac State with two goals, while Amanda Gray and Leah Larot netted one each.
Dedini said he was able to play most of his bench and that the game was a success.
The women have been picked to win the Big Sky Conference after hitting a school record for season wins, with 10 in 2006.
This marks the first time in Sac State’s 14-year history to top the list.
Although it’s a big honor, Dedini said it puts a target on the team. He also said that in the last two years, the team that has been picked to top the league but hasn’t even made it into the playoffs.
“We need to take it one game at a time,” he said. “Every game (will be treated like) the biggest game of the season.”
Sac State will host the San Jose State Spartans at 2:20 p.m. on Friday and Fresno State Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Both games will take place on Hornet Field and feature doubleheaders with the Hornet men. The men will play Portland at 5 p.m. Friday and Oregon State at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Dedini said the Hornets need to be prepared for the Spartans, even though they lost to Santa Clara.
He said it’s been a long time Santa Clara has let two goals pass the net.
“We don’t want to take them lightly,” he said.
Dedini’s mindset is on San Jose. He knows Fresno will be another tough opponent, but he’s not thinking about the Bulldogs until after Friday’s game.
“We know they are always a good strong team,” he said.
