Mother’s Day

Most mothers are happy with flowers on Mother’s Day, but they are even happier when they receive thoughtful unique gifts from their children and loved ones. Remember that your mother isn’t the only mother on Mother’s Day. Loved ones such as your grandmother also deserve gifts on this special holiday. When special thought is put into a gift it means so much more to the receiver.

Gabrielle Stafford, interior design major and sophomore, is making her mother a homemade card shipped in a homemade envelope. “The card is layered in scrapbook papers, flower embellishments, hand calligraphy and gold ribbon,” Stafford said. She said that only special people in her life receive handmade cards because they are so time consuming to make. Inside the card is a gift certificate to a day spa for $100. Stafford puts about three or four hours into her gift cards and she says, “The card means so much more to my mom than the present itself.”

Creative gifts such as these are surely the way to go if you want to make someone feel special. Nicholas Avey, photo major and senior, plans on taking a photo for his mother, for Mother’s Day, who lives out of state. Avey says that his mother appreciates receiving his photos in the mail because they are a part of him and it is a genuine way of saying “I love you.”

Not everyone has a mother to give a present to on Mother’s Day. Melissa Breech, psychology major and senior, misses her mother who has passed away but still celebrates Mother’s Day with her grandmother every year. Breech chooses to give her grandmother flowers on Mother’s Day and takes her out to eat wherever she chooses.

Spending time with a special mother in your life is a gift in itself, but to spend time making a gift is just as comparable. One can make a poem and frame it for their mother; one can even put together a photo album for their mother. An idea that many people are choosing to do this Mother’s Day is to make their mother jewelry. It can be time consuming and expensive, but then again it doesn’t have to be according to Tracy Guitierrez, 45, and sales floor manager at The Bead Fetish.

The Bead Fetish is a bead shop in downtown Sacramento located on L and 17th street. Gutierrez has been working at the bead store for over three years and says that for the past two days the majority of her customers have been in the shop to make something for someone for Mother’s Day. The Bead Fetish has just recently won a spot on the A-list for KCRA for the best women’s accessory shop.

Gutierrez says that the most popular beads are the crystals, which are small plastic beads that resemble crystals that come in all different sizes and colors. Sparkly, semi-precious, and fresh water pearls are also some favorites this year. “Bracelets, earrings, necklaces and bookmarks are just some of the things you can make here at the shop,” Gutierrez said. The average price you are looking to spend in the store is about $30. Gutierrez said that people can make simple handmade jewelry for cheaper.

Kelly Publicover, senior and liberal studies major, works full time at The Bead Fetish. Publicover helps customers customize their jewelry and helps them string them onto wire or chain in the store.

The Bead Fetish offers classes for people who would like to become more experienced with making beaded jewelry. Gutierrez said that not only is it a nice gift to make your mother jewelry for Mother’s Day, but The Bead Fetish also offers gift certificates for classes, which can also make a very nice gift for Mother’s Day.
