Men’s tennis wins sixth Big Sky title in 10 years
May 14, 2007
While Sacramento State’s men’s tennis team was mobbing No. 4 singles player Ramon Perez for clinching the Big Sky Championship, Tim Lantin escaped a lethargic first set.
An overwhelmed Perez said “That’s what I dreamt about the whole season. I’m a senior, that’s my last match; I really wanted to clinch the last match. It’s a dream come true.”
The top-seeded Hornets swept the No. 3 Eastern Washington Eagles 4-0 Sunday at Gold River Racquet Club. It was the third match in three days for the Eagles, who just didn’t have enough to pull the upset.
The two teams met more than two months ago with Sac State winning at Eastern Washington 6-1.
At No. 1 Xavier Barajas-Smith dispatched his opponent 6-1, 6-0 while No. 3 Gabriel Loredo fought back, winning 6-3, 6-4.
Loredo trailed 4-1 before recapturing the momentum he had in the first set and pumping up the crowd.
After already capturing the doubles point, the Hornets needed one more singles victory to win the Big Sky Championship.
At No. 3 Perez and Warwick Foy won 8-5 and No. 2 doubles Hague Van Dillen and Barajas-Smith won 8-4.
The No. 1 tandem of Anton Stryhas and Loredo were ahead 6-4 before play was stopped.
The title is the team’s sixth in the last 10 years and its first since 2003.
The intensity and nerves will continue for the Hornets in the NCAA tournament which begins on May 11.
