Men’s tennis sees season come to an end

The eighth seeded Oklahoma State Cowboys (18-4) swept the unseeded Sacramento State Hornets (20-6) 4-0 in first round play in Stillwater, Okla.
The match began with the Cowboys taking the doubles point. On court one, 47th ranked Daniel Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov (14-7) won 8-5 against the Hornets’ Anton Stryhas and Gabriel Loredo, while on court three, Ivan Puchkarov and Dmytro Petrov (13-5) dismissed Ramon Perez and Warwick Foy 8-1.
On court two, the Hornets’ Hague Van Dillen and Xavier Barajas-Smith were on serve late in the set against Oklahoma State’s Artsem Burmistrau and Nathan Byrnes until the match was stopped.
In singles, the Cowboys continued where it left off in doubles.
Oklahoma State’s Petrov improved to a team leading 17-2 record. In similar fashion to his doubles match, Petrov overpowered Perez 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4.
The Cowboys continued their dominance at No. 1 singles with 23rd Nedovyesov beating Barajas-Smith 6-1, 6-4.
The Hornets best season since 2001 was slowly slipping away.
At No. 5, the Cowboys’ Burmistrau clinched the match 6-3, 6-3 against Foy.
Anton Stryhas (20-4) was the only Hornet to win a set against the Cowboys. The match was stopped with Stryhas leading Puchkarov 6-4, 2-5.
Other matches that did not finish were No. 3 Loredo 2-6, 3-4 and No. 6 Timothy Lantin who trailed 6-1, 4-3.
Oklahoma State advances to play its rival No. 26 Oklahoma who the Cowboys have beaten 16 straight times. Oklahoma edged No. 40 Cal 4-3 to advance to the next round on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Stillwater.
