Men’s golf leads after first round of championship

The Sacramento State men’s golf team is at the top of the totem pole after the first round of the Division I Independent Golf Championships Friday in Windsor, Co.

The team shot 283, a six-stroke lead over second place Utah Valley State (289) and an 11-strokes ahead of third place Idaho State (294).

“We have been playing pretty well and practicing pretty well,” coach Adam Pohll said.

Two Sac State golfers are in the top five and freshman Grant Norton leads the pack with a career-best 68.

Sophomore Jeremy Harris rounded out the top five with a 70.

Sophomore Cody Miller shot a 71 (tied for sixth), freshman Kyle Candlish shot a 74 (tied for 15th) and sophomore Scott DeBorba shot a 76 (tied for 27th).

Host Northern Colorado and Weber State are tied for fourth (296) and North Dakota State and South Dakota State are tied for sixth (297).

The second round of the championships will continue on Saturday with the final round on Sunday.
