Baseball gets waxed by Nevada

The University of Nevada (25-19, 9-5) taxed Sac State pitching for six runs on seven hits in the sixth inning Saturday to eliminate a four run deficit and eventually won 11-5. The Wolf Pack completed the comeback by getting to the Sacramento State bullpen for four more unanswered runs on a three run shot in the seventh and a solo in the ninth.

Five of the six runs allowed in the sixth were charged to losing pitcher Trevor York. The loss drops the freshman to 1-8 on the year and Sacramento State fell to 11-32 overall and 6-14 in WAC games.

The Hornets appeared to be clicking on all cylinders to start the game, scoring five runs in the first five innings. In the first, Sac State third baseman David Flores and shortstop Blake Crosby took advantage of some sloppy Nevada defense to score two unearned runs on just one hit. The Wolf Pack was charged with two errors in the inning.

Hornets’ first baseman Gabe Jacobo added to the 2-1 lead by blasting a frozen rope home run off the third level of Parking Structure I in the third inning. The long ball was Jacobo’s team leading eighth home run and he is now second in the WAC with five home runs in conference play.

Nevada starter Rod Scurry continued to struggle in the fifth when Crosby led off the inning with a bloop single to center. Flores followed suit, hitting a homerun that just cleared the 370 foot marker in left center field. Flores’s third homerun of the season, which gave Sac State a 5-1 lead, was evidence that he has broken free of his early season slump.

“It’s important for us to have him going,” coach John Smith said. “He made a couple of adjustments and he’s doing a much better job at the plate.”

After an impressive start to the game York collapsed in the sixth, allowing four of the first five Nevada batters to record hits before surrendering a game tying two-run double to Wolf Pack second baseman David Ciarlo. The double tied the game at five and knocked York out of the game.

Later in the sixth Nevada took the lead for good when Hornet reliever John Schlager surrendered a two-out base hit to first baseman Shawn Kort, plating two Nevada base runners.

Nevada broke the game open in the seventh when Ciarlo touched Schlager for a three run jack that just stayed inside the left field foul pole. The home run, which put Nevada up 10-5, capped a five RBI day for the Wolf Pack second baseman.

Smith, who was visibly frustrated by his team’s performance, said that the difference in the game was the solid performance by the Nevada bullpen as opposed to the inability of Hornets’ relievers to keep them in the game.

Shortstop Chris Siewert put the icing on the Nevada comeback victory when he hit a home run with the bases empty in the ninth. The opposite field homer completed the scoring in the 11-5 final.

The win gave the Wolf Pack the series victory and they will try to complete the three game sweep of the Hornets at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hornet Field.
