Causeway double duty
April 16, 2007
It was a clean sweep for the men and women on Friday at the Causeway Classic, held on the Sacramento State campus. The men obliterated UC Davis by more than 20 points, while the women’s side came down to the wire before they pulled out the victory.
“This meet is all about rivalry,” Nancy Searcy said. “You want to improve your times and get Personal records, but as long as you beat an Aggie, it feels good.”
The victory comes sweet to Sac State in that Davis has won the last several Causeway Classics in football.
For the men, it was a victory all the way across the board.
Raphael MacFarlane continued to tear up the competition with a victory in the long jump (24-04.5) and in the 100, barely edged out Jody Johnson, 10.68 to 10.69.
Johnson currently has one of the top five 200 times in the nation and won the event with ease. His time was not his best, but good enough for the victory.
Chris Kirkwood continued to improve in the javelin, winning with a throw and personal best of 211-10, four inches off the school record.
“It’s right there, I keep getting close. I can feel it,” Kirkwood said.
Chauncey Corbin finished second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.79, and Jason Nelson finished second in the 400 with a time of 48.10. David Nichols continued his winning ways. In the shotput he won with a throw of 59.05 was almost 10 feet better than his closest competitor. He also won the discus with a throw of 159-08.
Brennan Phipps won the hammer throw with a heave of 162-01.
The men won the 4×100 with a Causeway Classic record of 40.25, beating Davis by a full second.
For the women, Searcy continued to do well, winning the 100 hurdles with a time of 13.89. Searcy also won the 100 with a time of 12.03 and placed third in the long jump behind Lori Vaught, who won with a leap of 19-03.5.
Tyreina Henley-Henderson won the 400 with a time of 56.02, and Ashley Ast continued to dominate in the javelin with an easy win and throw of 148-11.
