Throat vocal group comes to perform
February 8, 2007
The “Ancestors of Siberia” will play Saturday in the Music Recital Hall of Capistrano Hall at 8 p.m. Performers will include Tuvan throat singers, Russian Old Believers, Kamchatkan folk dancers.
Chirgilchin, a throat singing group from Southern Siberia, train from childhood to perfect singing techniques that create two vocalizations at once. Chirgilchin translates to mirage or miracle in the Tuvan language and has a female artist, a rarity in throat singing.
The Russian Old Believers split from the Russian Orthodox church in the 1600s due to disagreements in church reform. Their lifestyle reflect 17th Century Russian dress and customs.
General admission tickets are $25 and available at the CSUS ticket office at (916) 278-4323.
