Sacramento State student Janelle Takeoka just wanted her boyfriend Jeff Daigle to dance with her.

Thanks to the Sacramento State Ballroom Dance Club and club president Curtis Vandermolen, her wish has come true.

“I lured him in,” said Takeoka, who used the magic phrase ‘make me feel special’ to get Daigle to bring her to last Friday’s Swing Dance Workshop in Yosemite Hall.

“She always wanted me to dance,” Daigle said. “The only dances I’d do were salsa and swing.”

Vandermolen, who competed with the Sacramento Ballroom Dance Company at the International Grand Ball in San Francisco, took over as club president this semester.

“Last semester (the club) had funding problems, they couldn’t get a consistent room, and therefore their membership dropped,” Vandermolen said. “So I stepped in and took charge.”

The Ballroom Dance Club, which is open to both students and the community, now has around 130 members and is growing.

“It’s a safe and social way to get exercise and meet some high-class people,” Vandermolen said. “A big selling point for the guys is that there are girls who want to dance with them.”

Swing, Salsa, the Tango, and the Waltz are just some of the dances that the club offers.

“People say, ‘I have two left feet and I can’t do it.’ They’re completely wrong,” Vandermolen said.

The club meets on Wednesdays at 7-10:p.m. in the Redwood Room on the first floor of the University Union. Wednesday night classes run through Dec. 13, with a nightly charge of $3.

In addition to the Wednesday classes, four workshops will be held over the semester. The next workshop, which will teach Salsa, will be held on Sept. 27. The location has not been set.
