Velazquez pleads no contest

Julio Velazquez, a former Associated Students Inc. officer, pleaded no contest to one felony count of unlawfully obtaining a sum of over $10,000 on June 28.

Velazquez’s plea was part of a bargain that included the dismissal of 15 other felony counts.

Also included in the bargain was Velazquez’s agreement to pay restitution to ASI amounting to $27,304. Donald Heller, Velazquez’s attorney, reserved the right to review that figure.

According to the terms of the plea bargain, Velazquez will receive punishment of no more than 120 days, 30 of which will be work projects. The purpose of the other 90 days will be determined at judgement and sentencing, according to Judge Gary E. Ransom, who presided over the case.

Velazquez, who served as ASI executive vice president (2003-05) and ASI vice president of finance (Fall 2005), must also submit a DNA sample to the court.

Velazquez’s case has been postponed numerous times, the last of which occurred on June 15.

Heller had no comment about the case.

I think everything has been stated on the record, Heller said.

If the court decides not to agree with the terms of the plea bargain, Velazquez may retract his plea and a plea of not guilty will be entered. The case would then go to a preliminary hearing and trial.

Velazquez will face judgement and sentencing on Aug. 11.
