Tigers strike in overtime to beat women’s soccer

The box score makes it look like a blowout, but the Sacramento State women’s soccer team lost just 1-0 in overtime at the hands of the Pacific Tigers on Sunday in Stockton.

Seven minutes into the first overtime period Pacific forward Mandi Van Dorn headed the ball into the net off an assist from fellow forward Carla Vellutini.

The final box score shows that the Tigers were the aggressors all game long as they took 24 shots to the Hornets three. Pacific also held the advantage in corner kicks by a tally of eight to three. The only Hornet to take a shot on goal was sophomore forward Katie McCoy, but it was saved by Pacific goalie Jamie Souza.

Sac State goalie Jenny Lawrence made a match-high eight saves, but it was not enough on Sunday.

Pacific’s record improves to 7-4-1, while Sac State’s record falls to 3-5-2 on the season.Sac State next game is at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Saint Mary’s.
