Students get resume tips

Students have the opportunity to meet with local employers and learn tips and tricks on how to perfect their resumes at the Career Center’s Resumania event on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Resumania is a drop-in clinic where students meet one-on-one with local employers and have their resumes critiqued in order to learn how to make a better resume, said Julie Collier, a career counselor and co-op coordinator for the College of Engineering and Science.

“It’s an insider’s perspective on the best way to build a successful resume,” Collier said.

Resumania is the first event in a series hosted by the Career Center to assist graduating seniors in being better prepared for obtaining jobs after graduation.

Ideally, graduating seniors would attend each event sequentially, all of which lead up to the culminating event — an on-campus recruitment where employers conduct interviews and possibly offer jobs to students, Collier said.

Resumania started in the spring semester of 2004 because the Career Center began to hear negative feedback from employers about student resumes. Resumania is an answer to help improve students’ resumes, Collier said.

A quality resume is important in landing that job after graduation. Collier said she heard the average recruiter will look at a resume for seven to ten seconds, so it must look really strong.

“A resume is a fundamental tool in a job search kit,” Collier said.

Jayme Valdez, the recruiting officer with the Sacramento Police Department, recommends students stick to a one-page resume. Valdez also suggests it is always good to go in chronological order, beginning with the most recent education and most recent job experience first.

The next Resumania will be held Feb. 27. Visit the Career Center’s website for information about all upcoming events at www.csus.edu/careercenter.
