Shots fired inside student apartment complex

Two separate incidences of fired shots disrupted The Verge on the evenings of May 2 and 3, said Janine Hunter, director of community operations for The Verge.

“Right now it is under investigation and we are cooperating with the Sac PD,” Hunter said.

Sacramento Police Sgt. Justin Risley said there have been no arrests nor has anyone been identified for firing a gun.

The Verge, formally known as Jefferson Commons, is near the intersection of 4th Avenue and 65th Street and is an apartment complex of mostly Sacramento State students.

Hunter said that some students have voiced their concerns about the shootings last week but added that for the size of the apartment complex, there is enough security to patrol the area.

“Nobody was hurt nor was any property,” Hunter said. “It was just fired shots.”

On both evenings when shots were fired, four community patrollers were on duty and responded in a timely manner and phoned Sacramento Police, Hunter said.

“We have sufficient patrol. They were there for both occurrences,” Hunter said.

The complex is accessible by vehicle via access cards issued to tenants, but pedestrians on foot can come in without a card, Hunter said. The two shootings have not prompted immediate action by The Verge because managers will wait to see what the investigation reveals, said Hunter.

Risley said the Sacramento Police are not investigating because it was just shots fired.

“Obviously there is someone dropping by, nearby or who lives there and is just shooting,” Risley said. “We will try to work with management and figure out what’s going on.”
