RWEC cost increases to $120 million

Sacramento State’s planned Recreation, Wellness and Events Center has two new elements: a new football stadium for the Hornets and a price increase of about $50 million from its first estimates, Sac State spokesman Frank Whitlatch said.
The facility will now cost $120 million, up from the initial estimate of $73 million, and up from a $90 million estimate given just two weeks ago.
Whitlatch said that the increase is due to the projected rising cost of steel and the plan to completely renovate Hornet Stadium.
“Obviously, we need a better facility for our football team,” Whitlatch said. “Even in the initial idea for the (RWEC), there was a concept that we could do a stadium renovation in the same time. So, that idea has been batted around.”
The student contribution from fee increases will not change, and the additional costs will come from private fund raising, Whitlatch said.
