Hornets score late, spoil Montana’s upset bid

Sacramento State’s women’s soccer team played hard on its way to a 1-1 tie in double overtime against conference rival Montana on Friday. The Hornets dominated the last 65 minutes of the game but were unable to get over the top.

The first half played pretty evenly as both teams attempted three shots and entered halftime scoreless. The second half saw a different Sac State squad than the first. However, it was Montana that drew first blood.

In the 69th minute it was Montana’s star forward Lindsay Winans putting her eighth goal away after a scramble in front of the net following a corner kick. Other than that the half belonged to the Hornets.

Montana played defensively after the goal, which worked for about 15 minutes. Sac State’s own high-scoring forward, Kayelyn Satkowski, got into the act with her eighth goal of the season with just over five minutes remaining in the game.

The goal ended a stretch of several minutes where the Hornets took shot after shot at the tired Montana defense. Satkowski’s shot deflected off of a Montana player before sneaking in the left side of the goal.

“To score that late to tie it up really brought them down,” Satkowski said. “We dominated the second half.”

In the second half and overtime the numbers show the domination Satkowski spoke of. Sac State uncorked 18 shots to just six for Montana. Sac State’s edge in the two overtimes was a decisive eight to one.

The game followed a familiar pattern for the Hornets, who have had trouble putting together a solid 90 minutes at times this season.

“We came out in the second half and played with a lot of heart,” sophomore midfielder Missy Matzen said. “If we could play like we did in the second half all the time we will be fine.”

Matzen made several successful tackles during the game, drawing roars of approval from the crowd. She also nearly scored twice, once colliding with Montana goalie Grace Harris after Harris won the race to a loose ball. Harris stayed down for a couple of minutes but was able to continue.

With one minute remaining in the second overtime Harris was red carded for catching the ball outside the box. She had come out moments earlier to head out a ball away from the box. Sac State regained possession and launched a shot on goal. Harris, still outside of the box, grabbed it and was immediately sent off. Montana’s Sara Campbell stepped in as goalie and saved one shot in the final minute to preserve the tie.

“We had all the momentum in the second half and I like how the team responded after being down,” assistant coach Randy Dedini said. “Obviously you always want to win, but when you’re five minutes away from a loss a tie looks pretty good.”

Both keepers in the game played well. Montana’s Harris led the match with nine saves while Sac State’s Jenny Lawrence had six. Sac State out shot the Grizzlies 21 to nine. Freshman Beverly Goebel and junior Katie McCoy each had five shots to lead the match.

The tie sends the Hornets record to 7-6-2, 1-1-1 on the season while Montana goes to 7-6-1, 1-1-1.

Sac State continues play tomorrow as the back end of a doubleheader with the men’s team. The game begins at 2:30 p.m. against Eastern Washington.
