Hornets beat Cal Poly in second overtime

After a devastating 4-3 double overtime loss on Friday to Boise State it would have been easy for the Sacramento State women’s soccer team to suffer a letdown Sunday.

Instead, the Hornets came back and won 2-1 over Cal Poly in much the same way they lost Friday. The Hornets and Mustangs played to a 1-1 tie for the first 103 minutes of the game before freshman Beverly Goebel put away the golden goal.

The team played so hard today, Goebel said. I just got in position and Katie (McCoy) played a perfect ball to me.

The game winner came off of a free kick from the right side. McCoy played the ball into the box where the head of Goebel was waiting. The ball spun over Cal Poly goalie Alli Tramel, which set off a celebration in front of the goal.

The win did wonders in erasing the feeling of Friday’s tough loss. I told the team Friday to remember how it feels to lose in overtime, Head Coach Katie Poynter said. They decided that they don’t want to have that feeling anymore.

The scoring started in the 71st minute when junior forward Kayelyn Satkowski followed up on a deflected shot by Goebel. The goal was Satkowski’s team-leading seventh of the season.

Beverly made a good cross and I saw the goalie miss it and I just put it in, Satkowski said.

Less than seven minutes later the Mustangs tied it up with a goal from midfielder Cara O’Hagan. The shot came from far out and fell just over the out-stretched hands of Hornets goalie Jenny Lawrence.

The game was as close as could be until Sac State’s deciding goal.

This win takes the taste of Friday’s game out of our mouths, Satkowski said. This feels so good after that loss.

The game marked the final non-conference tune-up heading into the conference opener on Thursday at defending champion Weber State at 3 p.m. Sac State lost to the Wildcats 4-1 last year for the team’s only regular season conference loss.

Sunday’s win improved Sac State’s overall record to 6-5-1 while Cal Poly fell to 6-5.

The Hornets end the season with seven straight conference games before the tournament starts on Nov. 2.
