ASI, Economic Association join to collect food donations
November 24, 2006
Sacramento State’s Student Economic Association will be hosting a canned food drive to benefit the Sacramento Food Bank in conjunction with Associated Students Inc. from Nov. 27 to Dec. 14.
Donation barrels will be set up in the ASI office on the third floor of the University Union and on the ground floor of Tahoe Hall. All canned foods and non-perishables will be accepted.
The event is set to kick off at 11am on Nov. 27 in the ASI office.
Items in particular need range from canned tuna, fruits and soups to powdered milk, baby formula and other non-perishable baby foods. The groups are asking that no food in glass jars be donated.
Sacramento’s Family Services will be working alongside the Sacramento Food bank for the duration of the drive. Family Services is a private non-profit organization devoted to helping lower-income families’ needs.
“So many people concern themselves with injustices happening in the other parts of the world,” said Emily Hodge, the director of Social Events for the Economic Association. “In doing so, they unintentionally over look the needy in their own backyards.”
The Food Bank has several programs in place to help homeless and hungry families get back on their feet and back to self-sufficiency, Hodge said.
“You want to help make the world a better place?” Hodge said. “Start with making Sacramento a better place.”
