Women’s soccer hangs tough, loses to 23rd ranked Fresno 2-0

State Hornet

Sacramento State’s women’s soccer team fought hard against 23rd ranked Fresno State Sunday, but the Bulldogs were just too tough, eventually taking the game 2-0.

The Hornets managed to go into halftime with the game still tied at 0-0, but just after halftime the Bulldogs pulled away. In the 64th minute it was Fresno’s Erica Sugano banging a shot by freshman goalie Mandy Trojan from 25 yards out. Just seven minutes later Fresno put the game away with a goal from Nicole Gutierrez.

Sac State actually out-shot the Bulldogs 20-19 in the game, but was unable to put anything past Fresno goalie Angie Larsen, who made nine saves. Trojan made five saves on the day. Junior forward Katie McCoy led the Hornets with seven shots, four of them on goal.

Fresno State’s Andrea Alires was red carded in the 49th minute on an excessively physical play on Senior forward Kelly Novak.

Sac State’s record falls to 5-3 while Fresno improved to 6-1-1. The Hornets go on the road again this weekend with games at Air Force on Friday and Colorado College on Sunday.
