Katie Jane brings her sultry sound to Sac State Wednesday
February 6, 2006
Alternative, rockpop artist, Katie Jane Gowdy, 24, will be performing Wednesday at noon in the Redwood Room in the University Union.
In her first appearance at Sac State the Winter City native will be singing 17 of her self-written songs along with a few cover songs to ease the nerves.
” It’s so much easier to perform other people’s songs because it’s not as intimate as putting your own words out there,” Gowdy said.
Gowdy has yet to become completely comfortable in front of an audience, it was just five years ago that she began teaching herself how to play the piano and writing songs.
Still without formal training, 25 self-written songs later and a record deal with Independent label Pocket Records. Gowdy is doing what she is most passionate about, making music.
When it comes to creating music, Gowdy admits she knows nothing about the way things should work, but relies solely on what feels and sounds right to her.
Lacking the usual musical knowledge is what music producer Joe Menegus thinks has given her such a unique sound.
“Katie Jane doesn’t understand anything musically, so she just plays what she feels and the outcome is beautiful,” Menegus said.
“I came across one of her songs on Myspace and I fell in love with her voice, it’s very sultry, emotive and definitely unique. She has a sound all her own,” English major Jill Sitcler, 21 said.
Gowdy describes her showcase as a mellow performance with a bit of an alternative edge and a lyrical insight into her life as a young single mother who is trying to make her mark in the music world.
