The 61st Causeway matchup between Sacramento State and UC Davis was decided in just in over an hour and half in favor of the host Hornets.

The Hornets made the feat more difficult than most would have expected. With 14 attack errors and 10 service errors in the match, UC Davis was able to stay competitive all three games of the 3-0 (30-24, 30-24, 30-21) sweep.

“Even though we only went three games, I wasn’t pleased with the match and the unforced errors,” coach Debby Colberg said.

Eight players from Sac State would play all three games while hitting .275 against the Aggies’ .110 hitting percentage.

During the second game things seemed shaky for the Hornets as they would not lead until midway through as outside hitter Atlee Hubbard had run into a slump. After struggling through service errors and bad passes Hubbard and the Hornets would take the lead and never looked back.

“There wasn’t enough effort or aggressiveness in those first two games,” Hubbard said. “I broke down on my passing and we were too passive.”

Hubbard dug down for her confidence in game three, meanwhile digging up 13 balls and 14 kills in the match to lead all players.

Only two players on the UC Davis team recorded double digits in any statistical category.

The victory pulls the Hornets even with the Aggies at 20-20 in the race for the Causeway Cup.

The Hornets are now winners of five straight, 14 of 16 matches and are 9-1 at home. Now the Hornets will fly off for a three-game road trip, each against conference opponents. The team is just above .500 outside the Hornets nest but has only suffered one loss in conference play.

In the Big Sky standings Sacramento State stands alone at the top, leading Portland State and Eastern Washington by two games.

Sac State will return to the Hornets Nest on Thursday, Oct. 27 against rival Eastern Washington at 7 p.m.”Playing Eastern is always fun, it isn’t hard to get the team pumped up for that one,” Colberg said.
