US President George Bush

-Attended a three-day summit that was intended to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the United Nations. During the summit, Bush wrote a note to Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice stating that he needed to take a bathroom break. He also urged the U.N. to help solve United States poverty.

-Made a speech to the nation from New Orleans in which he took responsibility for the things that went wrong after the hurricane hit. Bush urged for a war on poverty after noticing that there may be a problem with it in the country.

-Attended a service at the national cathedral in Washington as part of the national day of prayer for the Hurricane Katrina victims.

-Congratulated Afghans for turning out to vote in general elections. “We commend the tremendous progress that the Afghan people have made in recent years,” Bush said.

University President Alexander Gonzalez

-Announced the creation of a special scholarship to assist students who recently enrolled after Hurricane Katrina forced them from their universities on the Gulf Coast. An initial gift of $5,000 has already been pledged.

-Participated in the Valley Vision Management Committee which was looking at the future of the Sacramento Region. “We educate the skilled workforce, contribute to the region’s cultural life and provide expertise in planning for the future,” Gonzalez said.
