Hornets lose to No. 12 Cardinal

After beating No.12 Stanford 4-3 on the road on Friday night, Sacramento State baseball returned to Hornet Field to try and upset the Cardinal once again.

Stanford would have none of it, though, as they pounced on Hornet pitcher Matt Campbell early on.

Jed Lowrie smoked a two-RBI double to right-center, scoring Chris Minaker and Adam Sorgi. John Mayberry, Jr. followed Lowrie’s feet with an RBI double of his own, making the score 3-0 before Sac State had even recorded an out. Michael Taylor continued the onslaught for the Cardinal with another RBI double.

After Jim Rapoport’s RBI infield single and Minaker’s sacrifice fly, Stanford had built a 6-0 lead, knocking Hornet starter Campbell out of the game after only one-third of an inning completed.

Cardinal starter Jeff Gilmore stymied the Hornet offense up until the fourth inning, when Sac State finally broke through.

Centerfielder Brian Conradi singled up the middle to score both first baseman Brett Flowers and designated hitter Brian Blauser, cutting the deficit by a third, making the score 6-2.

After relieving Campbell in the first inning, Livesey held Stanford scoreless with a solid outing, allowing only five hits in five and two-thirds innings.

The Hornets had countless chances to cut the Cardinal deficit even more, but couldn’t capitalize on many of the opportunities they had; Sac State left a total of nine runners on base.

Much of the credit for the lack of offense was due to Gilmore’s effectiveness; he stifled the Hornet offense up until the fourth inning, then held Sac State scoreless then after. Gilmore finished the day with a line of eight and one-third innings, allowing only six hits, giving up two earned runs, walking one and striking out six.

Stanford added some insurance in the ninth inning, tallying two more runs after a home run by Sorgie, making the score 8-2; that score would hold up, as the Hornets couldn’t summon up any more magic to beat the nationally ranked Cardinal.

Sac State is now 8-16-1 on the season.

The Hornets play their next home game at 2 p.m. on Friday.
