The real facts about Measures 1 and 2
December 8, 2004
My name is Meika Stoddard, and I am the ASI Director of Engineering and Computer Science.- I and a few other individuals have been running the No on Measures 1 & 2 campaign.-
We have been dedicated to circulating the real facts about Measure 1 and Measure 2 in order to educate the students on what the upcoming election is about.- While ASI is using your student fees to pay for the YES campaign, we are trying to raise awareness about the issue with money out of our own pockets.
– Thus, our campaign and promotion materials are on a much smaller scale. Please see my webpage at http://gaia.ecs.csus.edu/~stoddardm/VoteNo.htm for more information.
-As a result of my opposition to Measure 1 and Measure 2, ASI President Josh Wood and VPAA Luke Wood have publicly ripped down over 300 of our NO on Measure 2 flyers. Now they have posted flyers with my picture on it, trying to defame and ridicule my perspective on the issue.- This juvenile and pathetic ad hominem argument for Measure 2 is an utter waste of student money; as it is student fees that pay for all of their promotional flyers.-
They hey have the time, man power, resources and student money available for the YES side of this campaign, and this is how they react to a few people trying present the other side of the issue. They are obviously scared that students might figure out what Measure 2 is actually about.
-Initially, I voted yes to put the measure on the ballot.- It was an error on my part, and I apologize to my constituents.- Once other board members and I gathered more concrete facts about the impact of the legislation (facts that were not presented to the board by the authors of the legislation) we realized that we had made a mistake.-
At the next meeting I moved to take back our initial decision and re-vote on the legislation.- The majority of the board voted with me to revisit the legislation because they too had grave concerns about the new information we had learned about the effect of this measure.- Unfortunately we needed 2/3 of the board to approve the d! ecision to re-vote, which we did not have, thus the measure remained.-
-I am regretful that I voted for the measure initially. I should have done more in depth research instead of trusting what my fellow board members were feeding me about the legislation.- However, I am now using as much of my personal time and resources to let students know that both Measure 1 and Measure 2 should not be passed by the students.-
I made a mistake, you don’t have to! The ultimate decision is in the hands of the students!- They are using your money to promote only one side of this issue– they are trying to take away financial aid money to start a retention center -but there is no plan and no budget and no guarantee where this money will be spent!- Vote NO on Measure 1 and Measure 2.-
