Raising tuition is just fine, thank you
October 19, 2004
A lot of students think that school costs too much. The cost of attending Sacramento State is $1,256. That can really hurt a budget when you have to work and go to school.
Some students might be pretty freaked out about the fact that the state university system is trying to raise tuition again. I think we need to stop complaining about the amount that we pay for college and realize that we are getting a pretty cheap ride.
At UC Davis (the college just down the road) students pay $2,500 a quarter. That is four times the amount that we spend. At Oregon State University students pay $300 more per semester and $700 more if you went to Arizona State. Tuition for non-residents is a lot more. The only reason that they are raising fees for college is that the costs of running a college are increasing. Salaries, books and computers seem to cost more every year. The only other option for paying off these debts is to put a greater burden on the taxpayer.
It is not fair to force others to pay for us to go to college. It is our choice to come here. We weren’t forced by the government to go to college. Therefore, we should not force the government to pay for us.
That startling idea still doesn’t stop the question: How do I pay for college with all of the increasing tuition? Some of us may have to take out loans out that we will pay back for years. We may have to work insane amounts of hours and get little sleep. Maybe community college is an option for some. Some of us may just realize that college isn’t right for us. A lot of jobs out there are that require little education and pay over $50,000 a year. The alternative? We could work a fast food job for the rest of our lives.
