COLUMN: Cause(way) for optimism

Jimmy Spencer

Five years straight, five straight losses. This one was bad, 58-23.

Few current Sacramento State students have ever seen the Hornets win the Causeway Classic.

And that just flat-out sucks — no bragging rights for an entire Sac State tenure.

Those in attendance this past weekend know the frustration of losing to these guys year after year. Traveling to the old hick town; having our players and fans harassed by pompous rich kids chanting “Suck State” and bellowing “Staaate Schoool … Staaate Schoool!”

As a Sac State student, how could you not hate Davis? I don’t care who you are, if you go to school here there should be nothing other than distaste for these cow-riding nerds.

I know the hate lives within everyone. Kings fans hate the Lakers, Giants fans hate the Dodgers, and stupid people hate Barry Bonds. Not everyone knows the reason they feel hate; in some cases it’s really just “ya know, because.”

But sometimes you know dead on why you feel the way you do and with the Aggies it’s simple: They’re just pompous jackasses.

Admit it.

Everybody has a friend in Davis. Sometimes, you’ll even hear, “Oh I know of a party in Davis.” So you head out there and it always sucks. Always. Never once has a 20-minute trip to the heartland of bikes and boring made for a successful night. Not one time. They’re just not fun people.

So to not only lose to those schmucks, but to be extinguished quite handily, was devastating. And unfortunately the attitude of Sac State students the last five years after losing the Causeway has been along the lines of “oh well, we suck, who cares anyways” and it takes until next year’s Causeway to bring any of them back.

But this year, redemption is available sooner than ever.

The Sac State and UC Davis athletic departments have announced an all-sports trophy awarded to the school that wins the most head-to-head competitions in the 17 sports in which the schools compete directly.

Victories in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball will be awarded 10 points. Wins in the remaining 13 sports will award five points each. For sports where the teams meet more than once, the points will be divided by the amount of games and credited accordingly.

The team with the most points by the end of the season is awarded the Cup.

Talk about spreading the wealth. The minor sports at Sac State suddenly have meaning. The cup could be hanging in the balance when the Hornets meet the Aggies at Lake Natoma in rowing on April 23. That’s some exciting rowing right there.

It very well could be the best idea ever and a hell of chance at good ole payback.

This season we get the chance to play them in both volleyball and men’s basketball. In both, I guarantee blowouts.

Last season, even without facing Davis in these two strong sports for us, we still would have taken home the cup. We’re just better at pretty much everything than Davis.

Sure, Davis beat us in football, but that’s only 10 points in the grand scheme. The Causeway Cup will prove Sac State’s overall dominance in athletics over those alfalfa chewers down the road.
