Osmond: A host with the most
October 29, 2003
Donny Osmond, the man behind the singing voice of Captain LiShang in 1998’s “Mulan” and widely known as thetitle character in “Joseph and the Amazing TechnicolorDreamcoat,” came to Sacramento for the “Pyramid”audition tour on Oct. 18 (the show airs weekdays at 4 p.m. on KXTV10).
A one-on-one chat with Donny proved the multi-talented man isjust as down-to-earth today as he was in his teeny bopper daysthree decades ago.
Q: When the opportunity came (for “Pyramid”), whatwas really going through your head?
A: I thought they got the wrong guy. I remember the phone calland I said, “I don’t know if you know this, butI’m a singer, not a game show host.” And they told methat I’ve been in the business for such a long time,”Marry your audience with this audience, and we thinkit’ll work.” And they were right, and I’m havingthe time of my life.
Q: Do you ever miss things like (“The Andy WilliamsShow”), or when you were performing with your brothers, hadthe show with your sister?
A: Very much so, it’s a great question because youdon’t see those things nowadays. The big production numbers, even a family group like we had, you don’t really see thatmuch anymore.
I miss the challenges that Andy gave us, he would tell us acouple of weeks in advance what we were doing, like,”You’re all gonna be ice skating,” or,”You’re all gonna be playing pianos.” And we hada deadline to do it the way he wanted it and be good at it.
I don’t miss the work, but I miss the memories.
Q: Do you get the same feelings at family functions? I imagineyou guys might be by the fire, and then just randomly breaking intosong…(laughing)
A: (laughing) Singing Christmas carols, “Chestnuts on anOpen Fire,” right?”
Q: But are there any things these days that remind you or arevaguely similar to that?
A: Every once in awhile, we’ll have, like, a familyreunion. We do get together and if the moment feels right and wedon’t force the fact that, “OK, we’re alltogether, let’s sing a song!” And the lights dim, thespotlight’s (laughing)…but, every once in awhile,we’ll start harmonizing, we’ll start doing a song andremembering the things we used to do in the 70s.
I think a lot of people have these visions in their mind.”Oh, let’s go to Utah and we’ll go to the Osmondcompound.” And we’ll all be around sitting by acampfire, singing a song, playing guitar.
Never has been that way. But once in awhile, we’ll breakinto a song.
