The total price tag for Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez’s office remodel has turned out to be more than $265,000–not the $165,000 originally quoted before the semester started.

The discrepancy comes from $102,953 donated to the project by the non-profit CSUS Foundation that runs the Hornet Bookstore, among other operations on campus.

The $165,000–cited by the university administration in news accounts–came from state general fund revenues, according to Vice President of Administration Edward Del Biaggio.

The CSUS Foundation is a non-profit, self-supporting organization that receives its money from the Hornet Bookstore, the Copy Graphics Center, the University Union Store and the Dining Commons, said Nancy Pennebaker, special assistant to the executive director of Foundation board.

The Foundation also collects money from campus eateries and oversees other operations, she said.

Money collected by the Hornet Bookstore and the Dining Commons does come primarily from Sac State students, Pennebaker said.

When the Foundation’s revenue exceeds the expenditures, the board of directors–which oversees the budget for the Foundation–approves how any extra revenue is utilized.

The board consists of faculty, students, members of the community and administrators.

“As part of the budget every year, the Foundation provides resources to the university,” said Foundation Executive Director Elroy Littlefield.

Pennebaker said it is the university’s job to decide how to utilize any funds donated by the Foundation.

Del Biaggio was unavailable to comment on the decision to use the donated money towards the new presidential office.

The expenses of the newly remodeled office and conference room were primarily for deferred maintenance and repair, said Vice President of Administration Edward Del Biaggio.

President Gonzalez requested special upgrades for the purchase of countertops and cabinets, Del Biaggio said. The upgrades themselves, which were not outlined in the original budget, totaled more than $22,000.

The cabinets, molding, wood trim and shelves cost approximately $52,000. Almost $15,000 was spent on the purchase and installation of the floor tile and countertops with the requested upgrades.

Approximately $9,000 was spent on doors and hardware for the office and conference room, while just over $6,300 was spent on light fixtures.

A new refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave cost $8,740, paid out of the foundation donations. Almost $14,000 went towards various electronic equipment, including a DVD player, screen and projector.

It also cost $47,633 to furnish six offices for Gonzalez’s staff and more than $20,000 for chairs for both Gonzalez’s suite and the conference room.

Associated Students, Inc. President Peter Ucovich said he understands the Foundation is a separate entity from Sacramento State and it is at their discretion how to spend their funds.

“It is a little alarming we were told it cost $165,000 and it actually cost $265,000,” Ucovich said.

President Gonzalez was unavailable for comment.
