Pollard’s comments regretable, but on the mark

A simple joke between friends and former teammates turned into a chaotic fiasco that made Kings fans look stupid and Kings center Scot Pollard look even worse.

The joke started when Vlade Divac said, as a joke, that he would pay every fan who attended the Piston game $5 if they booed former King and current Detroit Piston Jon Barry on his return to Arco Arena last Tuesday.

Barry, catching on that Divac was joking, said that he would pay everyone who attended the game $6 is they didn’t boo.No harm done, right? I wish.

When Barry entered the game, the boos were heard throughout Arco. Barry mockingly wiped tears from his eyes, and then play resumed.

And every time Barry touched the ball, fans booed. The end result was Barry playing only six minutes. Piston head coach Rick Carlisle benched Barry the entire second half.

In the third quarter, Pollard went to join the Kings’ TV broadcast team of Grant Napear and Jerry Reynolds to update everyone on his injury and do a little analyst work.

Instead of analyzing the game, Pollard gave his opinion of the fans booing Barry, his close friend.

Pollard was only on for 30 seconds, but left a lasting impression on Kings fans everywhere.

He called Kings fans “morons” and “ignorant,” and he didn’t understand why the fans would boo Barry after all he had done as a King.

What was Pollard thinking?

He was out of line by using the Kings’ television network to make such strong and emotional statements.

However, Pollard is partially right.

But before everyone starts saying that I don’t know what I’m talking about, the following message is to all of those who booed continuously; not those who booed once and got the joke, or didn’t boo at all.

Are you people really that dense, or did you really need the five bucks? To boo Barry continuously because “Vlade told me to” is the weakest thing I have ever heard. Fans like you are what is wrong with the current state of the Kings.

There are too many “Johnny-come-lately” fans that don’t know much about the Kings except that they’re the only game in town.

You don’t see the hardcore Kings fan as much because the hardcore can’t compete with the rich and privileged for tickets. These are the fans who booed Barry, and these are the fans that Pollard meant to tell off.
