Super Senior Mai Kim
October 6, 2002
Mai Vang Kim, a Business Administration-Management Information Systems (MIS) major, calls herself “a graduating SUPER senior,” and in light of her accomplishments and extra-curricular activities, it’s hard to argue with her. Mai was hired a little over a year ago by the California Department of Education to design and maintain a new database for the General Education Development (GED) Test. The GED is a national test taken by adults who did not graduate from high school; if passed, an examinee earns a certificate equivalent to a high school diploma. After handling such a difficult and important job with great skill and excellence, Mai parlayed her experience into a Data Processing position at a local family owned mailing services company. In her spare time, Mai says she helps teach the youth kids at her church “about the Bible and how to apply its words to our daily life.” However, it is clear that the most important thing in Mai’s life is her relationship with her husband, Kwan Kim, whom Mai says she met in high school when “he pointed out the pimples on my face.” Kwan must have made up for that comment somehow, because after high school they dated for five years and were married last July. As Mai points out, taking care of her “goofball husband, working thirty to forty hours a week, taking ten units, and teaching youth kids,” is tough work indeed. Must take one super person to do it all.
Hornet Staff: So, why Sac State?
Mai Kim: I chose Sac State because it was cheap.- Not lately however.- Can you believe a daily parking permit is now $2.25!– Thank God I’m graduating.
HS: Where is your favorite place to study?
Mai: Honestly…at work.- My mind functions much better in the daytime.
HS: If I turned on your stereo right now, what would I hear?
Mai: 105.5, The Fish
