New licensing costs increase OneCard fees
October 15, 2002
Sacramento State’s student OneCard fee increased from $5 last spring to $9 this fall.
According to Ronald Grant, director of support services, the cost of the software license used in creating the card increased, raising the cost of purchasing the OneCard. The software license cost is a payment that must be made every year.
“The software license went from $18,000 last year to $35,000 this year,” Grant said. “And next year it will be $50,000.”Grant said the motion to increase the OneCard fee was approved in April.
Any student-related fee increase proposal is first sent to the Student Fee Advisory Committee for review and then on to University President Donald Gerth.
The $9 fee funds the operation of the OneCard that includes not only the software license but also materials, equipment and employee salaries, according to Grant.
With the current sticker applied, Sac State’s official photo identification card can be used to check out materials from the library, ride Sacramento Regional Transit buses and Light Rail free, deposit funds into a debit account and access computer printing privileges.
According to Sac State junior Keri Woolery, the OneCard cost increase is not really an issue since other state universities charge more for their student cards.
“It’s a good idea,” Woolery said.
Unlike Woolery, Sac State junior Oscar Villalobos thinks the increase is unreasonable.
“Four dollars is too much of an increase,” Villalobos said. “I don’t really use it that much.”
