ASI seeks alternative funding for community chamber mixer

Associated Students, Inc. will not consider reducing the amount of money spent on their community chamber of commerce mixer despite concern from ASI members.

Plans for the gala event, which will exceed $3,500, were approved at an ASI board meeting on Oct. 2.

A student review committee found the mixer to be too exclusive, and ASI Post Baccalaureate Director Mohamed Hamada, said the amount allocated for the event is too substantial.

“ASI is afforded $10,000 per fiscal year to finance such events and to act as a reserve if spending exceeds the fixed budget,” said Hamada. “Spending one-third of this funding for one event is too much.”

Hamada’s concerns have elicited action from the board to search for alternative sources of funding.

ASI President Eric Guerra has been working with Hamada to garner such support.

“We have considered asking various companies to underwrite the event and we are going to talk with CSUS alumni about donations,” Guerra said.

Progress in the creation of an invitation list has been stagnant, as a proposal for the event has just been sent to the Chambers of Commerce said Erin Hicks, the ASI press secretary.

“Some ideas have been thrown around, but nothing is concrete,” said Hicks.
