Students are extremely busy people, what with their class and work schedules. At times it can be difficult to find time to eat a healthy meal, one that is more substantial than french fries or a burger. If you are a vegetarian or vegan finding something suitable to eat on campus is even harder. Luckily, there?s a new restaurant at Sac State to help fill the culinary void.

A new restaurant, Mother India, has recently opened with a menu that will cater to vegetarian, vegan, or people who simply enjoy spicy food. Mother India offers a variety of northern Indian dishes. Each dish has a unique flavor and has a moderate spiciness.

Their menu includes vegan dishes such as bhartha, which contains smoked eggplant with onions and tomatoes as well as aloo baingan (potatoes and eggplant). They also include chicken masala, which is a spicier dish with a lot of flavor

At Sac State, Mother India has a rotating menu and is relatively inexpensive. You?ll spend about five dollars for a full meal. Each dish is made ready to go, a plus for students who are always on the move.

The owner of the Mother India restaurants, Singh, a native of northern India, pays special attention to the recipes he uses for the restaurant. In order to make sure his vegan dishes don?t break any rules of the vegan diet he personally went to the Sacramento Co-op to learn about the special needs of the vegan diet. In addition to adopting new recipes, Singh listens to the customer?s suggestions in order to create the best possible menu.

“It?s great,” Sac State student Jasdeep Randhawa said during a stop at Mother India. According to Singh, the restaurant has done very well and even has a small repeat customer clientele.

The Mother India restaurant is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday. You too can have a taste of India by making the trip to the Mother India restaurant located in the Riverfront Cafe near the Hornet bookstore. There is also a Mother India restaurant located downtown at 11th and J St. The portions of food are very generous and a welcome change from the ho-hum drudgery of burgers and fries.
