Sacramento State?s Alumni Center will be hosting the first Boxing Reunion Hall of Fame Banquet this evening in the Steven Lee Yamshon Alumni Center.

The event, which will begin at 6 p.m., is in honor of Sac State?s past top boxing champions along with legendary coach and boxing teacher Hank Elespuru.

Forty-seven years ago Sac State began holding it?s first boxing matches. From 1955 to 1960, the campus had outstanding boxing teams; however it was due to a fatal death in collegiate boxing back East that ended majority of the college boxing matches around the world. Since then Sac State is known for winning two national championships in boxing along with several Pacific Coast champions and several gold and silver medals.

“They used to pack the gym here,” said Linda Canfield Scott, Membership Development Director of the Alumni Center.

Scott can still remember attending some of the boxing matches and mentions what a wonderful time it was for everyone back then.

Out of the 55 team members and/or assistants, 36 were found. Out of the 36, 6 are deceased but will still be represented that night by family and friends. All together, 31 former boxing members will be attending the banquet.

The event is open to the public and costs $35 to attend. For more information regarding the banquet please contact the Alumni Center at (916) 278-6295.
