Libertarian vs. Green, today in Sacramento

Matthew Hodgins

The California Governors debate is coming to Sacramento today, but this debate won?t feature Bill Simon or Gray Davis, instead it will include the governor candidates from the Green and Libertarian Parties.

The third party governor?s debate will take place at the Secretary of State Auditorium in the Golden State Museum on 1020 O St., doors open at 7 p.m., and admission is free.

The debate will include candidates Peter Miguel Camejo from the Green Party, and Gary Copeland from the Libertarian Party, this will be their fifth scheduled meeting in a series of debates that have taken place up and down the state.

Though the public and the pollsters show little chance for either party to claim victory in November, third parties within the state and nationally have proven to be the deciding factor in many elections.

Depending on the closeness of the election either party could play a spoiler role for Simon or Davis in November especially with current polls showing a virtual dead heat between the two men, the Greens and Libertarians have the opportunity of costing one of the big parties the election in much the same way Ralph Nader did to Al Gore in the last Presidential election.

Peter Miguel Camejo is county appointed trustee of the Contra Costa County Employees retirement Association, he has had a long career of activism including marching in Selema with Martin Luther King Jr., and a run for the Presidency in 1976 as a socialist. Camejo also competed in the 1960 Olympic Games on the Venezuelan sailing team.

Camejo describes some of his experience by saying, “…I have worked on renewable energy, organic farming, affordable housing, and community investments.”

Gary Copeland who calls himself a “…practicing Druid Unitarian,” is CEO of Next Cure Corporation a bio-information company, and a long time activist within libertarian causes.

“I?m running for Governor for my children’s future, and the future of our state. My job as a candidate is to project a vision and rally individuals to secure liberty and happiness,” Copeland said.

These two candidates have not been invited to the Simon and Davis debates, and they?re not waiting for their invitations.

“…the Republicrats won?t invite us to their debates ? so we?re throwing our own!” said a press release endorsed by both parties on the debate.
