Valentine’s Day fun for the unattached

Noeh Nazareno

The middle of February has arrived and the beginning of the semester is still fresh in your mind. The end of the semester is a long way from now, and maybe you?re blue. You?re now colorfully in the spirit for Valentine?s Day!

Okay, so the stress of school probably doesn?t put you in the mood for the most romantic day of the year, but that?s no reason to be down in the dumps. There?s plenty to do on and around Feb. 14.

(In fact, Shawn Cash and Jeff Jensen of 100.5 The Zone will be hosting an on-campus version of “The Dating Game.” Sponsored by UNIQUE,the event will be held at noon today in the Redwood Room of the Union. With thousands of students on campus, maybe you?ll find someone to paint the town red with.)

Too much attention, you say? Well, there are alternatives for those of you who aren?t romantically inclined. Spending time with a friend is always fun ? provided they?re single too, of course.

If you have a single friend available, or one that can spend time away from their boyfriend or girlfriend, some fine dining might be in order. For those low on cash, a simple sit-down restaurant like Applebee?s, Chili?s, or Johnny Rocket?s should suffice.

Or perhaps you might like to treat yourself out to really fine dining in the Sacramento area. Frank Fat?s in Downtown, California Fat?s or Fat City in Old Sacramento are trusted eateries with quality delicacies, while the new Fat?s AsiaBistro in Roseville might do the trick. Arrive in dressy-casual attire, and call ahead ? there may be couples with the same idea in mind.

If eating out doesn?t tickle your fancy, the movie theater is always a good place to run to. Catch up on the latest hit movies like “A Beautiful Mind,” “The Count of Monte Cristo,” or “Snow Dogs.” If you?re trying to avoid anything with a hint of romance, check out “Black Hawk Down” or Arnold Schwarzenegger?s “Collateral Damage.” Wait until this Friday, and you can catch another promising Denzel Washington flick, “John Q,” or the latest World War II movie, “Hart?s War,” starring Bruce Willis.

At home, cozy up to the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City on NBC and admire the graceful figure skaters, or watch slalom skiers tackle turns at breakneck speeds. There?s always the local Blockbuster Video to assist you, as well; catch up on last summer?s crop of films, such as “Legally Blonde” or “Moulin Rouge,” or check out whatever else catches your eye (fortunately, for those of you who shy from romance, most of the “tissue” flicks will probably be gone).

If none of these ideas grab you, there?s always a book or a board game with your name on it. A few extra hours of sleep never hurt anybody, either.
