Students find peace with yoga and meditation on campus
February 20, 2002
Students looking for a way to alleviate the stress that accompanies being in college and having a job are finding solace in a yoga and meditation club on campus that teaches participants how to handle pressure.
Pauline Jones, the yoga teacher, was aching to get away from the hustle and bustle that comes with living in a big city. She found relief in trying yoga and meditation.
” I was ready to get away from city life and because of that I was full of anxiety and stress. Even though I didn?t know anything about yoga, I went to the first class and I was hooked,” Jones, said.Jones, a working student, said that yoga had taught her to find balance in all her activities.
” I learned I don?t need to juggle everything, but I can find a way to handle and balance everything. That is what yoga is all about, centering yourself and focusing on the tasks at hand without being stressed,” she said. Jones brought her love of yoga to Sacramento State after meeting Ricochet Klasinski at a meditation center in Sacramento.
“When I met Ricochet, she thought that this would be beneficial to students here on campus and I agreed. We got in touch with the people who ran the club and that is how I wound up teaching the club,” Jones said.
Scott Buser helps conduct the meetings. Both Jones and Buser were searching for relief from anxiety, stress and from the task of finding some fulfillment for that emptiness inside. They found a solution in meditation.
” I came across people who do meditation and yoga, so I went to a class. I found what was being taught there made sense, so I started going more often. I was searching for a purpose since I felt empty inside. I have now found a way to focus on what is going on inside of me to find my peace,” Buser said.
Having gone through the same trials and tribulations of juggling work, school and family life, Jones and Buser feel that peace can be found in meditation.
As Buser says, “Any age can try meditation and find fulfillment and relief.”
The club meets every Monday and Tuesday in the Valley Suite of the University Union from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
