College bowl pits brains against brains

After a 15-year absence, a competition of intelligence and knowledge is making a return to Sacramento State. The “College Bowl” will be held today at noon in the University Union Hinde Auditorium.

The event, advertised as a “competition of the mind,” will feature as many as eight teams that will face off in a wide variety of subjects designed to truly test each team?s overall academic knowledge.

Teams will be competing for food and entertainment coupons, which will be given to every member of the winning team.

In addition to the recognition of a winning team, an all-star team will also be organized with the most valuable and successful members of all of the teams sent to the regional competition in Long Beach.

Richard Schiffers, assistant director of the Union, said they decided to make a concerted attempt to make academic competition successful at Sac State.

Many years ago, Sac State held an annual trivia competition that was very popular and attracted as many as 30 teams and hundreds of people. Since then, interest in these types of competitions has been minimal, Schiffers said.

“We decided to enlist the help and support and faculty, staff and student organizations to gain interest in this competition,” Schiffers said. “We are hoping to build the tournament into a major event and extend it to a two or three day format.”
