Fast and furious Sacramento rock

Ryan Endean

Last weekend I went to two-thirds of a show at Old Ironsides. I missed The Brodys? show and I?m bummed out. But what can you do?

So this week?s review will be handed down to Snubnose and Red Planet, the bands who played before The Brodys.

Snubnose opened the show, giving the crowd a rocking good time. Snubnose has been known to perform a loud, energetic kick-ass rock show. This show was no disappointment, as the trio completely worked the crowd into a frenzy.

Snubnose?s music can be defined as a hard mix of surf and hillbilly rock, with some punk thrown in for flavor. The band has an album, which is also really good, but distant from their live performances. Snubnose is sometimes called Killin? Jar, so if you see either of those names, go check them out. They?re worth your time.

Moving on to Red Planet. Once again, this band is not technically local; they?re actually from San Francisco. They play in Sacramento all the time and have kind of been adopted by Sacramento fans. And for good reason too; they?re a great punk rock band.

Many of their songs had heavy 1980s-style guitar riffs. They also like to fill in the lull between each song with synthesized noise, reverb or feedback, which can get old after awhile.

That aside, these guys are your typical punk band. They had the fast beats, riffs and the catchy repetitive lyrics that always come with punk. The difference here is that they did it with so much energy and enthusiasm. By the time Red Planet got to their last two songs, “Let?s Get Ripped” and “Find Me A Girl,” the crowd was going absolutely nuts. With lyrics like “Find me a girl who likes it best when I drink,” it?s no wonder that Sacramento has embraced Red Planet as its own.

That?s it for me for this week. Drop me an e-mail if you?ve got a comment, question, request ? anything. Write to [email protected]
