Chalk graffiti mocks Gerth

Students and faculty arriving on campus Friday morning were greeted by chalk messages challenging President Donald Gerth?s decision regarding Monday-Wednesday-Friday classes.

Approximately 150 chalk messages appeared on the ground in front of numerous buildings on campus including Mendocino Hall, the Library, the Union and Lassen Hall, according to Campus Police.

Some of the messages expressed anger and frustration, challenging the potential schedule change next fall.

The messages read, “Save MW Classes,” “Professors and Students Unite!” and “Thank Gerth It?s Friday,” among others. One message read, “Disagree? Call ——” followed by President Gerth?s home phone number.

ASI is currently attempting to encourage Gerth to reconsider the schedule change.

“Associated Students, Inc. only takes diplomatic and approved procedural channels of getting things done,” said ASI Chair of Student Relations Janus Norman. “Some of the messages were very distasteful. Campus beautification is not ASI?s jurisdiction.”

California State Student Association Representative Brandon Kline commented that “these [chalkings] were effective in their drive to awaken the administration.”

Campus Police were notified and a report was filed.

“We?re assuming the time frame of the chalkings took place between Thursday night at 5 p.m. and Friday morning around 8 a.m. We were notified around 10 a.m.,” said Public Information Officer John Hamrick. “We have listed this as possible vandalism, but we are not sure yet.”

Facilities Management was contacted and requested to clean up the chalked area.

“We?re not too sure how to handle this and what the penalty will be. It may not be criminal, but could possibly be handled through Student Affairs. It could even be taken to the District Attorney?s office, or maybe a fine could be posted for whoever gets caught,” Hamrick said.
