Campus celebrates Mexican independence

Sacramento State will host a celebration of Mexican Independence Day tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Serna Plaza outside the University Union.

The name of the celebration is “Raices de mi Cultura,” which in English translates to “Root of my Culture.” The actual anniversary of Mexican independence is on Sunday.

UNIQUE Programs and Associated Students, Inc. are presenting the event in cooperation with the Greek organizations Nu Alpha Kappa and Lambda Theta Nu, and the Chicana group Mujeres Ayudano la Raza as part of the Cultural Affairs series at Sac State.

Angel Barajas, a Nu Alpha Kappa member, said “?16 de Septiembre? (Sept. 16) was the real Mexican Independence Day. ?Cinco de Mayo? just celebrates the taking of gold. Sept. 16, 1821 Mexico gained independence from Spain. A revolutionary by the name of Miguel Hidalgo led the way for Mexicans to gain their independence.”

This is the first in a series of events held to recognize National Hispanic month. Other events will include art exhibits, lectures and discussions.

The celebration will feature entertainment such as traditional Mexican dancing and music. Scheduled acts include the mariachi band “Mariachi Los Gallos” and folklorico group “Xtoles de la Danza,” and an exhibition of the “Machete” style of dance.
