More wins for men?s tennis; NCAA?s next

With its respective seasons in the books, the men?s and women?s tennis teams sent individual players to Southern California to take part in the Ojai Tournament.

On the men?s side, sophomore Sylvain Iff and senior Chris Smith competed in singles play and went 1-1. In doubles action, Iff and sophomore Nick Sheehan teamed up and went 1-1, while Smith and senior Joseph Gilbert went 4-0 and won the men?s doubles bracket.

For the women, sophomore Marta Gronowicz and junior Gabriella Lundqvist competed in the singles portion. Gronowicz went 2-1, while Lundqvist lost in the semifinals, going 3-1. In doubles, Gronowicz and junior Janice Mota went 4-1, losing in the finals to none other than Sac State?s other doubles team of Lundqvist and senior Caroline Svensson.

“(The competition) for singles was pretty good,” head coach Chris Evers said. “Doubles was good, but it wasn?t? as good as singles.”

In men?s doubles, Gilbert and Smith were able to breeze through its opponents, winning all four matches in straight sets. The most games the tandem lost were four, in the first set against its opponents from Pt. Loma Nazarene.

“It was a pretty good tournament,” Evers said. “They (Gilbert and Smith) played awesome. That was the first time they played doubles together.”

The two opened doubles action against a doubles team from UC Riverside and won, 6-3, 6-0. En route to the doubles finals, Gilbert and Smith also beat opponents from Pt. Loma Nazarene and Azusa Pacific, 6-4, 6-1, and 6-3, 6-2, respectively. In the finals, Gilbert and Smith beat another doubles team from Pt. Loma Nazarene, 6-0, 6-3, and claimed the men?s independent college doubles crown.

Iff and Sheehan made it to the quarterfinals before losing to US International University, 6-2, 6-1. In its first round match, the two beat Sonoma State.

In singles play for the men, Iff and Smith participated for the Hornets, with both going 1-1.

Iff won his first match, 6-2, 6-3, before losing to Ryan Terry of Cal Poly Pomona, 6-3, 6-3. Smith also won his first match, 6-0, 6-2, before losing to Benny Lin of Azusa Pacific, 6-4, 6-1.

“They (Iff and Smith in singles) played pretty good,” Evers said.

For the women, Gronowicz and Lundqvist participated in singles action. Lundqvist made it to the semifinals before losing to Krisztina Tamas of CSU Bakersfield, 6-1, 6-4. Lundqvist went 3-1 in singles action for the Hornets.

Gronowicz, who went 2-1 in singles play, was defeated in the quarterfinals by Anna Sieczka of Pt. Loma Nazarene, 7-5, 6-2. The two doubles teams for the Hornets rolled through their opposition to play each other in the finals of the independent colleges doubles action. Lundqvist and Svensson won four of their five matches in straight sets, while Gronowicz and Mota need three sets to defeat three of their opponents.Head coach of the women?s team, Bill Campbell, said that the players had fun, even when the two doubles teams faced off against each other.”They (doubles teams) have not really played a complete match against each other all season,” Campbell said. “It was also Caroline?s final match at the college level and both Gabby and Caroline both wanted to win.”Lundqvist and Svensson won their first two matches easily, and in their third match won, 0-6, 6-0, 6-1. The tandem of Gronowicz and Mota had a more difficult time reaching the finals. After winning its first match in straight sets, its next three matches took three sets to win. In the finals, Lundqvist and Svensson were able to win handily, 6-1, 6-3. The women?s season ended when it did not advance out of the Big Sky Regionals on April 14.The men?s team will now be idle until it takes part in the NCAA Championships beginning May 12. This will be the second time in three years that the men?s tennis team will make an appearance in the NCAA?s.Seeding for the 64-team field will be announced tomorrow.Evers will have to juggle his line-up a bit, due to an injury to senior Kevin Vieira. Vieira broke his foot in the Big Sky Championships.”He won against NAU with a broken foot,” Evers said. “Kevin?s record is awesome.”Evers stated that his team would probably face UCLA, Pepperdine, or Stanford in the NCAA Championships. All three teams are in the top 10.
