Sac State?s women?s 4×100-meter relay team sprinted the Big Sky Conference?s second fastest outdoor time ever in the event in the 60th Annual Modesto Relays Track and Field Festival Saturday at Modesto Junior College.
The Hornet foursome of Stephanie Byrd, Joni David, Myesha Kirtman, and Shanita Bryant teamed up for a time of 45.82 seconds, just two one-hundredths of a second slower than the program?s all-time record. The mark also places the quartet atop of league competition in the event.
“It was a great race, but there were a few technical things that could have been fixed,” Sac State coach Joe Neff said. “I think if they can work on the little things, the Big Sky record can be broken.”
Howard Story solidified a spot for this week?s Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships by pacing the 800 in 1:53.26. The sophomore finished eighth in the event. Teammate Anthony Elwell competed in the same event, placing 10th in 1:56.61.
Senior Rokeem Osby and freshman Kenan Smith were the Hornets? other male athletes that finished in the top 10. Osby sprung a six-foot-six mark for eighth in the high jump. Smith finished fifth in the 400, notching a 49.79.
Jennifer Burkhalter was Sac State?s top individual placer after taking second in the 400 in 2:11.90. Sandra Butler jumped a 5-03 in the high jump for the fifth spot while Bryant claimed fifth in the long jump following a 20-01 performance.
Karen Trapini earned eighth-place finishes in the long jump and triple jump, leaping 18-09 3/4 and 38-03 1/4, respectively.
Tracy Dahl took sixth in the pole vault, vaulting a 3.50-meter mark. On the track, Renee Warner finished 10th in the 100-meter low hurdles (14.10) and David was seventh in the 100 (11.98).
“We rested a lot of people for the event, mainly those that have already qualified for the Big Sky (meet),” Neff said.
The league finale begins Thursday at Pocatello, Idaho and ends Sunday. The NCAA Championships will run from May 30-June 3 at Eugene, Ore.
