Polly Esther?s

Ron Reed wants to take you to funky town. Reed is the general manager and operating partner of Sacramento’s newest hotspot, “Polly-Esther?s Culture Club,” which is located on 1696 Arden Way.
They’re right next to Chuck E. Cheese restaurant and a block away from its competitor “The Rage.”
“Our club is wide-ranging and diversified,” Reed said. “We have young kids experiencing the whole ?70s and ?80s for the first time and yet we also have older folks who get nostalgic and want to relive the ?70s and ?80s.”
In 1991, two guys in New York thought that the club scene was missing a retro ?70’s and ?80’s theme. Thus began Polly-Esther’s Culture Club, which opened in New York and continues to be a raging success. Since then, 19 other clubs have been sprouted all over the country and there are plans to open a few more in cities like Memphis and Las Vegas in the next few months.
Polly-Esther?s officially opened up for business in Sacramento on March 15. Unlike the other clubs in Sacramento like “The Rage” and “The Jukebox,” Polly-Esther’s is a 21-and-up only club that manages to squeeze every ounce of ?70s and ?80s pop culture into two rooms. Once your hand gets stamped, security guards then usher you into the ?70s room that includes a dance floor with a glittering disco ball, a cocktail bar, a life-size twister game and a Partridge Family bus replica that’s designed for people to take a breather and chill out.
In the next room, billboards of famous stars adorn the mirrored walls along with TV sets that only play hit ?80’s movies like “Ferris Bueller’s DayOff,” “The Breakfast Club” and “Footloose.” There’s also two DJ booths and a life-size “Lucky Star” Madonna picture that overlooks the dance floor full of modern dressed patrons who sing along with the ’80’s hits as they shimmy and boogie on down.
A frequent Polly-Esther?s attendee and Sac State psychology major, Arnita Quosig explains that Polly-Esther?s is the type of club that anyone can have fun at. “I normally try to avoid those cheesy meet-market places, but I always have a good time at Polly-Esther?s. The atmosphere brings me back to my childhood and the drinks are reasonably priced,” she said.
Polly-Esther?s hours of operation are Wednesday through Saturday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Wednesday is “Animal House” night, which means that anyone with a valid college I.D. can get in for $3, otherwise they have to pay $5. Wednesday is also the only day that Polly-Esther’s offers drink specials which are $2 on well drinks, wine, and domestic beer.
Thursday is “Charlie?s Angels” night, which means that ladies can get in for free from 8 p.m. till 9 p.m., after that Polly-Esther’s charges $5 for entry. On Friday and Saturday nights, there are no specials and it costs all customers $10 to get in. For more information, call (916) 922-1975 or log on to www.pollyesthers.com.
