Cappadonna gets a lot of help on CD
April 25, 2001
Balancing the good and the bad of life is what rapper Cappadonnaattempts to do in his latest album, titled “The Yin and the Yang.” In the beginning of the album, he assures the listener that there willbe “a lot of profanity, a lot of love, and a lot of hate” because hehas a lot of enemies, “friend-of-mies,” and “pretend-to bies.”
On nine of the ten tracks, Cappadonna?s friends are featured, such asShyheim, 8-Off, Da Brat, and Timbo King. As a Wu-tang Clan affiliate,Ghostface Killah appears on the track “Super Model,” and Raekwonappears on “Love is the message.” The Wu-tang sound is evidentthroughout much of the album, with the exception of the track titled”We know,” which was produced by Jermaine Dupri.
On the track “War Rats,” which is the only track that doesn?t featureanother artist, Cappadonna delivers a lyrical battle to all the”wanna-be emcees” and stands strong with his “new maneuvers?coming atall sorts of angles.”
In “Bread of life” Cappadonna attempts to feed us with “intelligentlife spans” and “vocabulary veggies” with an intent to “end alldevilishment.” This is a part of his album where he brings out thebalance of goodness where he is “laced in clean spirits” and”laid-back love.”
The track titled “Revenge” brings the evil balance for “The Yin andthe Yang.” Cappadonna and Timbo King chant “You better watch out forthis, revenge so sweet that you might want to flip.” A gloomy pianomelody sets the dark mood for this yang track.
Though he succeeds in his attempt to lyrically interpret the yin andyang, Cappadonna?s style of delivery wasn?t up to par with hisWu-tang counterparts. Most of the tracks couldn?t hold my attention, and at times, his lyrics did not blend with the music. However, otherartists such as Culture and Raekwon, managed to carry the album.
