Actress and comedian Margaret Cho will screen her film, “I’m The OneThat I Want,” at Sacramento State on Thursday, at 7:30 p.m., March 22 inthe University Union Ballroom. Sac State’s UNIQUE Programs, the Women’sResource Center, and the Multi-Cultural Center are sponsoring the event.

The film, which Cho self-produced and distributed, is comprised offootage from her live show of the same name, which is based on herexperiences growing up in the Bay Area and dealing with televisionexecutives on her defunct sitcom “All-American Girl.”

“A lot of people are really affected by the honesty of the film,” Chosays. “My main desire is to create a connection and a kind of intimacybetween me and the audience who’s come to see me.”

“I’m The One That I Want” has been a critical success and has grossedover $1 million since its release in 2000, with only a few prints of thefilm circulating.

Cho started performing stand-up comedy at age 16, and soon after won acontest in which the first prize was to open for Jerry Seinfeld. In herearly 20s, Cho started touring the college circuit, where she gainedpopularity and eventually was given her own ABC sitcom, “All-AmericanGirl.”

Conflicts with network executives over the show led to an earlycancellation, however, and Cho headed back to stand-up.

Besides her sitcom and stand-up shows, Cho has appeared in the John Woofilm Face/Off and voiced a character in Rugrats: The Movie, and has beena guest on numerous talk shows including Politically Incorrect, whichvisited Sac State last fall.

She has also appeared in several other TV shows, including Sex and theCity and Sesame Street, and has two more films forthcoming.

After the screening, Cho will stay for discussion with the audienceabout her film and life and will take questions from the audience.
